Our children are growing up in a digital world with technology right at their fingertips. They’re spending more and more time on the web—so teaching them to use technology responsibly and safely is critical. As a media and entertainment company, NBCUniversal is committed to educating parents, teachers and children on using technology responsibly and safely.
That’s why we’ve created Growing Up Online, a free interactive eBook on digital literacy and Internet safety and the first release from The More You Know Learning Series in collaboration with NBC News. The eBook was developed with expert guidance from Common Sense Media and NetSmartz Workshop (an education program of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) – the leading organizations in these areas.
Growing Up Online provides an informative, interactive, media-rich learning tool for parents and teachers of children ages six and older, as well four video comic books for kids. This two-part eBook features easy-to-use and compelling content, engaging instructional videos, discussion questions and key takeaways for conversations about issues of concern. The first part, The Parent Primer, prepares parents for discussions with their children about using technology responsibly and safely including topics like filtering and parental controls, how to find safe sites and cyberbullying. Part two, the Parents + Kids Section, contains four entertaining video comic books focused on real-life situations that may arise when kids go online.
Growing Up Online is available as a free download on Apple’s iBookstore for iPad and iPad Mini, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Google Play for Android devices and Kobo Tablets. The book is also available online for desktop and laptop viewing at www.themoreyouknow.com. A Spanish edition, Creciendo En Línea, is also available.
Growing Up Online will be featured by a number of NBCUniversal brands, as well as external partners including Common Sense Media, NetSmartz Workshop and Scholastic.
